Gender Affairs A term gender refers to the perceptions that societies have on division of roles and responsibilities which belongs to a man or a woman. In other word, it is sets of socially constructed roles and responsibilities which correspond either to men or women. It can also be said stereotypes which depicts sets of characteristics that particular groups assign to both sexes.
For a long period of time, human beings' capacities were limited to certain roles, responsibilities and duties in the society by undermining women. Nevertheless, naturally, human being has an ability to do something. However, both men and women were not equally accountable in different social activities. For instance, in our case women didn't take part in a domestic jobs, their responsibility were only limited to household jobs and looking after their children so that they were being restricted in using and exercising their human right equally as a human being.
Now a day, considering this human right violation as a fundamental issue, in our country, governmental and non governmental organizations have developed different strategies and policies in relation to gender equality that men and woman have equal condition for realizing their full human rights and for contributing to and benefit from economic, social, cultural and political development. There fore, Wollega University, the newly established University, has considered this matter as a core and established gender office since its foundation to speed up the teaching learning process and to make the University a suitable learning and working environment for all.
The office monitor the implementation of gender mainstreaming in different structures of the University, take part in different committees organized in the University and monitor gender equity in the decisions made by the University's management.
To enable female students socially and academically the office also facilitates and provides different trainings on:

  • Concept and issues of Gender.
  • Study and note taking skills.
  • Assertiveness skills .
  • Communication skills .
  • Life skills .
  • Reproductive health .
In addition to this, it also helps learners get trainings which are prepared by different clubs of the University. For example, make them to take part in programs and trainings designed and prepared by HIV, Anti-corruption, and campus life clubs. Read More
