Community Engagement

It has been rendering need based community services in various sectors.
Major ones include;

Supporting community schools: the office works on supporting community schools through provision of school and learning materials, teachers and administrators' capacity building, provision of additional learning space (class rooms) for primary schools; encouraging and awarding ranking students from such schools and arranging exposure visit to ranking students in various woredas by hosting in the University dormitories. This and other more interventions strengthened the partnership of the University dormitories. This and other more interventions strengthened the partnership of the University for servicing the community in its operation area.

Dairy heifer production and distribution: the University is producing Horro-Jersy crossbreed dairy heifers in Guduru animal production and research center. The center was secured from Oromiya regional government mainly to meet farmers demand for improved dairy heifers. Other research centers, Universities and the National Insemination center are also beneficiaries of the center. Besides dairy heifer distribution, the University also produces Hybrid maize and improved varieties of selected crops to improve farmers' access to improved seeds.

Furniture production in Engineering & Technology development Workshop: This the other potential scheme whereby the University addresses related needs of the community and institutions in the area. The scheme has good potential and capacity to expand its service to more beneficiaries.

Legal service provision for the community by the Legal Aid Center: three legal aid centers were established in Nekemte, Shambo and Gimbi. This was to realize justice for the poor who were devoid of the capacity to hire legal advocates. In addition to these services, the University also works on five units established under the center for the study of Environment and society. These includes, Art and Culture; Environment; Education, health and Nutrition; Urban studies and Rural studies. Various issues of this regard have been addressed and the center is working more on the issues by involving voluntary academic staff and students. Yet, it is planned to scale up these community services by involving more governmental and non governmental institutions.
